It is Friday - I stand at the foot of the cross

It is Friday
And I stand at the foot of the cross.

Nothing can be said, nothing can be done.
Action is futile – hebel.
I can hold the other's hands and weep, but I cannot be comforted.

It is Friday
And I stand at the foot of the cross.

The air is heavy still with waiting and longing.
Waiting for the inevitable, longing for the impossible.
Can this cup pass from me?
I look around me – all the colors are muted.
Dusty browns and grays – Cold and metallic.
Rolling black clouds cover the brilliant blue of the sky
As my soul is occluded by pain.
All that remains is the red of the blood
Running down the weathered wood of the cross.

It is Friday
And I stand at the foot of the cross.

I reach out and touch the raised grain of the wood.
It is rough against my fingertips.
The pong of unwashed wool and bodies crowds my nose.
I smell fear, pain, death. I taste it at the back of my throat.
I hear the labored breathing from the cross.
Death is near.

It is Friday
And I stand at the foot of the cross.

Remember Him!
Remember Him as the silver cord is severed, as the golden bowl is broken.
Remember Him as the pitcher is shattered at the spring and the wheel broken at the well.
Remember Him as the dust returns to the ground it came from and
His spirit returns to the God who gave it.

It is Friday
And I stand at the foot of the cross.

GOOD FRIDAY, A.D. 33

GOOD FRIDAY, A.D. 33

Mother, why are people crowding now and staring?
Child, it is a malefactor goes to His doom,
To the high hill of Calvary He's faring,
And the people pressing and pushing to make room
Lest they miss the sight to come.

Oh, the poor malefactor, heavy is His load!
Now He falls beneath it and they goad Him on.
Sure the road to Calvary's a steep up-hill road --
Is there none to help Him with His Cross -- not one?
Must He bear it all alone?

Here is a country boy with business in the city,
Smelling of the cattle's breath and the sweet hay;
Now they bid him lift the Cross, so they have some pity:
Child, they fear the malefactor dies on the way
And robs them of their play.

Has He no friends then, no father nor mother,
None to wipe the sweat away nor pity His fate?
There's a woman weeping and there's none to soothe her:
Child, it is well the seducer expiate
His crimes that are so great.

Mother, did I dream He once bent above me,
This poor seducer with the thorn-crowned head,
His hands on my hair and His eyes seemed to love me?
Suffer little children to come to Me, He said --
His hair, his brows drip red.

Hurrying through Jerusalem on business or pleasure
People hardly pause to see Him go to His death
Whom they held five days ago more than a King's treasure,
Shouting Hosannas, flinging many a wreath
For this Jesus of Nazareth.

from Herb o' Grace: Electronic Edition, Katharine Tynan

GOOD FRIDAY

GOOD FRIDAY -
THIS SOMBRE DAY
WHEN CHRISTIANS MOURN
A 2,000 YEAR OLD DEATH.

HE DIED, SOME SAY,
TO APPEASE A VENGEFUL GOD,
DEMANDING A ONE-TIME
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
FOR HUMAN SIN,
BOTH PAST AND YET TO COME.
IT WAS, THEY INSIST,
THE ONLY WAY
WE COULD BE SAVED.

OTHERS ASK
IS THIS THE SAME GOD
WHO SAID "THOU SHALL NOT KILL"
NOW OFFERING HIS SON
AS A SACRIFICIAL LAMB
TO BE SLAIN
FOR OUR SALVATION?

YET OTHERS SAY
HE DIED BECAUSE
HE LOVED TOO MUCH -
LOVED THE OUTCAST,
THE SINNER, THE SICK,
THE POOR, THE OPPRESSED.

AS HE HUNG THERE
BLEEDING, DYING,
SOME HEARD HIM SAY:
"FATHER, FORGIVE THEM.
THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO."
IS THIS WHAT MADE
THAT BAD DAY GOOD?

WHATEVER WE DO, HE HAD SAID,
WE DO TO HIM.
AND WE ARE CALLED
TO FOLLOW IN THIS WAY.
THUS, IF WE IGNORE ANOTHER'S PAIN
WE SURELY CRUCIFY HIM AGAIN.

IT WAS INDEED A BAD FRIDAY,
MADE GOOD BECAUSE
IT SHOWS THE WAY TO OUR SALVATION -
SALVATION AS LIBERATION.
LIBERATION
FROM OPPRESSION TO JUSTICE,
FROM WAR TO PEACE,
FROM HATE TO LOVE.
AND THIS
IS TRULY
RESURRECTION.

Holi Hai Bhai Holi Hai

Poem -- Happy Holi

The spring sun warms as it surely thaws
The thinning white blanketing Mother Earth
As the last snow melts the days get longer
Heralding the end of chilling winter’s stay
It’s the month of Phagun now it’s Holi
The long awaited Festival of Colour

Wake up dormant buds and sleeping seeds!
Burst forth in garbs a kaleidoscope of colour!
Holi’s rainbow’d sparkles a burst of splendour
With spectrum shades red and every hue
Setting ablaze hearts happy with skies azure

Life abounds in the landscape verdant
The chirping birds and the humming bees
Cavorting and conjoining for mating call
The fleeting exuberance of cycle eternal
Decorated Basant kites dotting the sky

Those of us who in cold climes reside
Must content with festivities indoors
In our hearts of hearts we also celebrate
For Holi’s festive warmth is here also
So as revellers play in open maidans
Let’s get the pitchkari, abrack and abeer

Yes, the days of Phagwa are here to make
Outdoors or indoors where you may be
In Holi’s uninhibited revelry let’s partake
Of unbridled joy seasoned with delight
Enchanted and exuberant it acts like tonic
Refreshes the body with fun and frolic

Holi Hai - Holi Hai - Holi Hai !!!!!!!!

Holi Hai - Holi Hai - Holi Hai !!!!!!!!
Dil ne ek baar aur humaara kehna maana hai,
Is holi pe phir useh rangne jaana hai.

Har saal khareeden hain rang, kari hai tayaari,
Is baar to khelenaa humaare saath, dekhnaa raah humaari.

Shahar mein sabse pooch rahe hain , rang-e-mohabbat kahaan milega
Raat ko khuda ne bataaya ki abhi aur imtehaanon se guzarnaa parega

Neela, hara , peela , gulaabi yeh sab to ek bahaana hai,
Holi ka ho din ya kuch aur hume to tumse milne aana hai

Is Holi pe useh rangne jaana hai,
Is Holi pe useh rangne jaana hai

Rangon ki Holi

Doston, is parv mein phailey hai rang saarey
Pichkari sang khelo Holi, ya ley aao gubarey
Choti Choti baatein hai, choti choti khushiya
Tum bhi jara haslo aaj, jab hasti yeh duniya
Na bura socho kisika, na rakho kisi se irshya
Karo kuch aisa, ki lage rang lai hai shiksha

Holi - Holi - Holi - Holi

Holi aati yaad dilati
Pichli kitni Holi

Vo bachpen vali Holi
Vo gubbaro ki Holi

Vo sakhiyo wali Holi
Vo gujiyo wali Holi

Vo thumko wali holi
Holi aati yaad….

Har Holi albeli hoti
Holi aati hume batati
jane kitne raj dikhati
Holi aati rang lagati

Holi aati gale lagati
Aakar sab ko nahelaati

Tun mun ka vo mail hatati
Holi aati yaad dilati
Pichli kitni Holi

Holi aati yaad dilati
Rango se tann mann sahlati
Bheege bheege geet sunati
Pichkaari se rang barsaati

Holi aati yaad dilati
Bhabhi, saali se rang dalwaati..

Holi aati yaad dilati
Pichli kitni Holi

Holi Kavitaein - Rango se Pyaar

Kyo mo pe rang ki maari pichkaari
Dekho Kunwarji doongi mein gaari
Bhag sakoon mein kaise mo san bhaga nahin jaat
Thadi ab dekhoon aur ko sanmuch mein aat
Bahut dinan mein haath lage ho kaise jane doon
Aaj phagwa to san ka tha peeth pakad kar loon

Jab phagun rang jhamkte hon
Tab dekh baharein holi ki.
Jab daf ke shor khadke hon
Tab dekh baharein holi ki
Pariyon ke rang damkte hon
Tab dekh baharein holi ki.

Basant khelein ishq ki aa pyara
Tumhin mein chand mein hoon jyon sitara
Jeevan ke houzkhana mein rang madan bhar
So rom rom charkiya laye dhara
Nabi sade basant khelia kutub shah
Rangeela ho riha tirlok saara

Le abeer aur argaza bhar kar rumal
Chidkte hein aur udate hein gulal
Jyon jhadi har soo hai pichkaari ki dhaar
Doudti hein narian bijki ki saar

Gulzar khile hon pariyon ke
Aur majlis ki tyari ho
Kapdon par rang ke cheeton se
Khushrang ajab gulkari ho

Holika Dahan

Year after year
purity of fire
is challenged by evil,
appeased with offerings

A full moon looks on
as winds stoke embers,
flare flames
to a flickering dance

Right in the center
of crimson blaze
sits Holika,
Prahlad in her lap -
her arms a circle of heat

White sparks fly from her hair,
eyes smolder in fury;
her mouth sucks in air,
engulfs rice and wheat

Wood chars,
coconuts splinter,
flowers singe
smearing earth with ash.

Year after year
faith survives.
Holika burns to death.

Holi Blues - English Poems

I am dreaming of playing with colors and gulal,
It is the Holi celebration after all.
I can't play inside my home, the carpets will get tainted,
I cant' play it in the yard, the grass and outer walls will get painted.
I thought I would go to the temple,
and enjoy the traditional Holi festivities,
Once again I am banned from playing with colors inside the temple,
I can't play the drums and sing "Holi hai" outside, as the neighbors don't like the noise.
Little disappointed, I head for the community centre,
they have the Holi celebration in the evening,
The kids perform and remind me of my cultural heritage,
I hear all the nice Holi songs and watch dances,
I enjoy Puas(sweets) and Goat meat curry as a special Holi treat,
but I still miss the colors and Gulal on my face.

As a kid, the full moon night before the Holi,
we had a big bonfire in the middle of little Indian City,
Next morning we will get up, make buckets of colored water,
No one in the neighborhood will be spared from colors,
When we ran out of the colors, mud, paint and coal tar,
would cover our faces in the cheerful spirit of Holi festival.

There was some special meaning playing Holi with girls,
this is the only day when we can get close to them with some hesitation,
the wet colors dignified their bodies,
the dry colors showed their beauty in multi colors.

After our morning session, we came home to the big feast,
All the puas, puris, pulav, meat and vegetable curries made our mouth water.
In the evenings, we wore our new kurta and pajamas,
went door to door, played gulal with young and old,
everyone offered their best sweet treats,
That was the real Holi, now it is only in my dreams.

English Holi Poems - Happy Holi

The trees smile with their sprout
of tender leaves and blooming flowers,
Eternal nature with its transient expression.
Hails spring with ecstasy and joy!
Bewildering shades with so many tinge.
The land of beauty and greatness,
India, witnessing color of happiness and peace.
Nation come alive to enjoy the spirit
A celebration of color- Holi!
An experience of content, harmony and delight.

Holika burns amidst merriment and mirth.
Evil overpowered by love and devotion.
A festival to commemorate 'Ras Lila'-
an enduring love saga of Radha and Krishna.

Gulal - red, green, yellow and countless.
A day's canvas - a riot of colors.
Lively crowd running hither and thither,
Rainbow of colors, dashing from every nook and corner.
Disregarding their woe and despair fervent folks,
rejoicing at the marvel of colors.
A day filled with luster and gaiety,
A day to smear our dreams-
With a splash of vibrant frenzy colors.
Holi Hai! A spring of unbounded fun and frolic!!

Tips For Safe Holi

Holi is meant to be a rough festival with tradition of applying colors to the guests, family and friends with or without their consent. Any kind of rudeness or misbehavior is totally forgiven on this day but these kinds of fun related things must be participated under a certain limits. Fun, food and colors is all that should spread on this holy day of Holi.
Happy Holi

Holi is regarded as the festival of joy and colors, but one should always be on alert while playing Holi because, if accident happens, it can ruin the spirit of that day. Also, one should always remember to use these small precautions so that no one that you know or love gets hurt unknowingly. Below are some of the ‘Dos and Don'ts’ that are necessary to enjoy Holi to its fullest.

“DO’s”

  • Dental caps are a good idea to protect you teeth from staining.

  • Sunglasses go a long way in keeping your eyes safe from the harmful chemicals of the colors.

  • Wear old and ragged clothes that you can be at easilydiscard while playing Holi, as your clothes may never look wearable again with all those color stains.

  • Brightly collared and dark collared clothes are preferable for the mood of the day.

  • Wear full-sleeved t-shirt or shirts that cover your arms fully. Socks will be a good idea too.

  • Always put some amount of oil on your head and body. Apply thick coating of paint on your nails- both in fingers and toes so that they remain protected.

  • Granted that it is almost impossible to save you face from attack of colors, so while being attacked, keep eyes and lips tightly closed or one can apply good amount of oily body lotion or oil to the body so that it does not become dry after taking bath this procedure will help you to wash off colors easily later on.

  • If you are traveling, keep the car windows tightly shut. Better still; avoid traveling on Dhuledi, the day of playing colors.

  • Use a hat, cap or anything like that to protect your hair from being collared with hard-to Rinse dyes.

  • Put on your worst gears so that you won't have to take on the hassles of an immediate Washing.

  • Do not bump into the frenzied group of mob if you take to streets. Better you cross the Road to the sidewalk across. Or, simply stay at a safe distance.

  • While washing off the color, use lukewarm water and keep your eyes and lips tightly Closed.

“Don’ts”

  • Discourage your children to play Holi with eggs, mud or gutter water. Never turn a blind eye to such unclean ways of celebration.

  • Avoid use of abir as it has flakes of mica.

  • If you do not want your children and family to participate in the revelry, have a nice and quiet holiday at home. Your children should be confident enough to take the decision of not participating in the Holi celebrations. Teach them not to fall prey to pressure.

  • Teach your children to respect other’s independence during Holi. For instance, you should stop your children from forcing Holi celebrations on a hesitant neighbor.

  • If you fancy a glass of bhang (grass of the opium plant mashed and mixed with milk or sweets), go ahead. But let your family not get carried away. Your children should not get addicted to this intoxicating drink. Holi revelry should be contained within decent limits.

  • Avoid loud and rowdy Holi parties, which might spoil the family environment. Children get accustomed to such parties at a very early age and tend to repeat the same type of celebrations later in life.

  • Don’t walk alone on the streets on the Holi day. You’ll be a sure target for miscreants. . Play Holi only with a group of close friends and relatives as against strangers.

  • Use only powdered color and water.

  • Keep a big bucket of water handy for your children, so that they do not resort to gutter water and other unclean sources.

  • Roll your windows up while driving your car.

  • Be available at one venue throughout Holi, especially if you want to avoid rowdy Holi revelers.

  • Always take some moments off to know the cultural significance of Holi. It is a festival of color, a harbinger of the spring season, and not a dirty game.

Rituals of Holi

Holi is a very important festival. In this festival main emphasis is laid on the burning of Holika or lighting of Holi. The origin of the traditional lighting of Holi is attributed by some to the burning of demonesses like Holika, Holaka and Putana who troubled little children or to the burning of Madan according to others.

Dol Purnima (Rang Panchami), the festival of colour is celebrated all over the country with great festivity and joy. On this day, people come out wearing pure white clothes and gather together in a common place where they play it with gay abandon.

Punjab: Holi also known as Holla Moholla in Punjab is played on grand scale. In fact holi of Anandpur Sahib is famous all around India. Even people from abroad go to Punjab to celebrate holi in northern style.

Lath Mar Holi being played in Barsana

Barsana: Barsana is the place to be at the time of Holi. Here the famous Lath mar Holi is played in the sprawling compound of the Radha Rani temple. Thousands gather to witness the Lath Mar holi when women beat up men with sticks as those on the sidelines become hysterical, sing Holi Songs and shout Sri Radhey or Sri Krishna. The Holi songs of Braj mandal are sung in pure Braj Bhasha.

Holi played at Barsana is unique in the sense that here women chase men away with sticks. Males also sing provocative songs in a bid to invite the attention of women. Women then go on the offensive and use long staves called lathis to beat men folk who protect themselves with shields.

In Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, this day is celebrated with special puja and the traditional custom of worshipping Lord Krishna.

Kolkata: In Shantiniketan the abode of Tagore celebrates Dol in a unique way. It welcome the season 'Basanta' with music and dance and early morning 'Path'. Young girls wear yellow saris and perform dance in around the 'ashram' to the song of Tagore's 'Khol dar khol'.

Three women having played Holi with colours, share some happy moments afterwards.

Bengalis celebrate Holi as Dol Yatra or the swing festival where the icons of Krishna and Radha are placed on swings and women sing devotional songs, throw colours and 'abir' on them and perform dances as devotees take turns to swing them

Traditional delicacies are prepared in advance and served while playing Dol Purnima. People visit each others houses and savor the delicious dishes, be it the famous Rossogolla or the preparation of 'Malpoa' (a dessert made of flour, milk, sugar and dry fruits). The colour, noise and entertainment that accompanies the celebration of Dol Purnima bears witness to the feelings of oneness and a sense of brotherhood and goodwill. The spring air is still cool, the water cold, but revelers make a special punch of an intoxicant called bhang, which is mixed in milk, to add to the festivities.

In the evening, the fire is lit. Every household makes an offering of sweets and a complete meal to the fire god. Puran Poli is the main delicacy and children shout " Holi re Holi puranachi poli ". However, this moonlight party now has modern bands and fluorescent lamps and a bonfire of a thatched hut of hay and twigs is arranged. Boys have to pay money to the girls for playing 'gulal' with them. In Krishna temples, devotees sing devotional songs, perform dances and play 'gulal' wearing traditional white and yellow turbans. On the last day of the festival, large processions are taken out to the main Krishna temple near Imphal where several cultural programs are organized.

At this time the men soaked with colours go out in large procession to mock alert people of the Krishna who might come to steal butter in their homes. The boy who finally manages to break the pot is crowned the Holi King of the Year for that community.

Holi Folk Song

This folk song is actually a 'bhajan' (devotional song) composed by Mira Bai, the famous devotee of Lord Krishna.

Syama Piya More Rangade Chunariya

Syama piya more rangade chunariya

Aisi rangade ke ranga nahi chhute Dhobiya dhoye chahe yeh sari umaria

Lal na rangaun main, hari na rangaun Apane hi ranga mein rangade chunariya

Bina rangaye main to ghar nahi jaungi Beet hi jaye chahe yeh sari umariya

Jal se patala kaun hai Kaun bhumi se bhari Kaun agana se tej hai Kaun kajala se kari

Jala se patala jnana hai Aur pap bhumi se bhari Krodha agana se teja hai Aur ik kalana kajala se kari

Mira ke prabhu giridhara nagara Prabhu charanana mein Hari charanana mein Syama charanana mein lagi najaria

Kids love coloured hats and latest sprinklers in the market. Other creative Holi gift ideas can be home decoration items and beautiful flower arrangements such as baskets and bouquets. Significance of Holi

In spite of being such a colourful festival, there are various aspects of Holi which makes it so significant for our lives. Though they might not be so apparent but a closer look and a little thought will reveal the significance of Holi in more ways than meets the eyes. Ranging from socio-cultural, religious to biological there is every reason why we must heartily enjoy the festival and cherish the reasons for its celebrations.

Mythological Significance

Holi gets us close to our religion and our mythology as it is essentially the celebration of various legends associated with the festival. Foremost is the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakshyap. The legend says there once lived a devil and powerful king, Hiranyakshyap who considered himself a god and wanted everybody to worship him. To his great ire, his son, Prahlad began to worship, Lord Vishnu. To get rid of his son, Hiranyakshyap asked his sister, Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap, as she had a boon to enter fire unscathed. Legend has it that Prahlad was saved for his extreme devotion for the lord while Holika paid a price for her sinister desire. The tradition of burning Holika or the 'Holika dahan' comes mainly from this legend.

Cultural Significance

Celebration of the various legends associated with Holi reassure the people of the power of the truth as the moral of all these legends is the ultimate victory of good over evil. The legend of Hiranyakashyap and Prahlad also points to the fact that extreme devotion to god pays as god always takes his true devotee in his shelter. All these legends help the people to follow a good conduct in their lives and believe in the virtue of being truthful. This is extremely important in the modern day society when so many people resort to evil practices for small gains and torture one who is honest. Holi helps the people to believe in the virtue of being truthful and honest and also to fight away the evil.

Social Significance

Holi helps to bring the society together and strengthen the secular fabric of our country. For, the festival is celebrated by non-Hindus also as everybody like to be a part of such a colouful and joyous festival. Also, the tradition of the Holi is that even the enemies turn friends on Holi and forget any feeling of hardship that may be present. Besides, on this day people do not differentiate between the rich and poor and everybody celebrate the festival together with a spirit of bonhomie and brotherhood

What is Holi ?

Holi (referred to as Phagwa in Bhojpuri), also called the Festival of Colours, is a popular Hindu spring festival observed in India, Guyana, Trinidad, the UK and Nepal.

In West Bengal, it is known as Dolyatra (Doljatra) or Boshonto Utsav ("spring festival").

On the first day, burning of the demoness Holika, Hiranyakashipu's sister, in huge bonfires at night. It is called Kama dahanam in Andhra Pradesh.
On the second day, known as Dhulheti, people spend the day throwing coloured powder and water at each other. The spring season, during which the weather changes, is believed to cause viral fever and cold. Thus, the playful throwing of the coloured powders has a medicinal significance: the colours are traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva, and other medicinal herbs prescribed by Āyurvedic doctors. A special drink called thandai is prepared, sometimes containing bhang (Cannabis sativa). Rangapanchami occurs a few days later on a Panchami (fifth day of the full moon), marking the end of festivities involving colours. Holi takes place over two days in the later part of February or March. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the Phalgun Purnima (or Pooranmashi, Full Moon), which occurred on March 22 in 2008. (In 2007,

Holi was celebrated on 3 March, the burning of Holika was on 4 March and the Dhuleti on 5 March.)
